S&T Manager, Sustainable Construction

Job Summary

Imerys Performance Minerals Americas has an exciting opportunity for an experienced R&D Manager to lead a team of scientists in developing and commercializing innovative mineral-based solutions for the North American market. (Building Products; Paints & Coatings; Caulks, Sealants, and Adhesives)

As the R&D team leader, you will be responsible for:

  • Championing team safety and promoting a safe working environment, including adherence to safety policies.
  • Partnering with marketing and sales teams to identify, assess, and prioritize opportunities to build the new product development pipeline, and leading efforts to achieve/beat innovation targets.
  • Leading the R&D team in developing efficient and systematic technical approaches for identified projects, emphasizing robust scientific work, critical thinking, and data analysis, and keeping scale-up requirements in mind.
  • Working closely with Commercial, Operations, and Engineering teams to successfully scale up and launch products and provide post-launch support as needed.
  • Working closely with the legal/IP team to assess the competitive landscape, file IP where needed, and protect Imerys intellectual portfolio.
  • Developing and maintaining the R&D team skill set via training programs/external collaborations/strategic hiring plans, identifying tools/approaches to shorten development cycles and increase speed to market.
  • Developing and maintaining collaborative interactions with other R&D teams within and across BUs on transversal projects, identifying and transferring opportunities and best practices.
  • Driving innovation with customers, universities, outside labs, etc. Delivering technically robust and differentiable products on time and within budget.

Required Skills

  • Expertise in product and process development, with a proven track record of delivering successful outcomes.
  • Wide-ranging knowledge of the Building and Construction markets, including Paints & Coatings, and the skills and technologies required to make an impact in this industry.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in R&D, with a focus on developing new products from their initial opportunity analysis all the way through to commercialization.
  • Deep understanding of science and technology as a competitive differentiator and a talent for using this knowledge to drive a new product pipeline.
  • Strong business acumen, with a keen understanding of the financial implications of new products and processes.
  • Proven success in influencing organizational strategy and driving change across organizational boundaries.
  • Proven experience in assessing the competitive landscape and developing and defending intellectual property.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and team-building skills, backed by strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

Education:

  • Engineering, Applied Physics, Material Science, Ceramics, Chemistry, or Architecture
  • B.S. with 12+ years experience
  • M.S with 10+ years experience
  • PhD with 8+ years experience
  • Experience managing a team, preferred
  • Experience in Industrial R&D.
